Pangri, Upper Sarma valley

Karma, Pangri, Upper Sarma valley

A small grant, a plastic tunnel and a loan repaid in two seasons.

Karma borrowed $240 from the Pangri village fund for a greenhouse: a plastic tunnel twelve metres long, a door, and seed.

The first winter

She grew spinach and radish when nothing else grows, and sold what the family did not eat. Fresh greens in January fetch three times the summer price in the valley market.

The loan

The fund is the village's own. Wellspring puts in the first money and the village council decides who borrows. Karma repaid in two seasons.

  • $240 borrowed in October
  • $95 repaid after the first winter
  • $145 repaid after the second
  • The same $240 has since built two more tunnels

What changed at home

The family ate greens through the winter for the first time. Karma's two children had fewer coughs, and the money from the market paid for boots.

Next

Nine families in Pangri now grow under plastic. The council wants a shared cold store so growers can wait for a better price, and is saving for it from the fund's small interest.
