Each spring we visit every home we have lit. This year 42 kits needed a repair, and 39 were fixed on the day.

Spring check 2026: 2,098 of 2,140 kits working

Each spring our technicians visit every home with a solar kit. They check the panels, test the battery and ask the family what has gone wrong since the last visit.

The numbers

  • 2,140 kits checked
  • 2,098 working on arrival
  • 39 repaired on the day
  • 3 waiting for a battery

What breaks

Batteries, mostly, after six or seven winters. This year 27 of the 42 faults were batteries. The rest were loose wiring, a cracked lamp housing and one panel hit by a falling branch.

A kit that is not checked is a kit that quietly stops working.

What the repairs cost

$3,870 in parts and eleven weeks of technician time. That is about $1.80 per home per year, paid partly from the village repair funds and partly from the solar programme.

What changes next year

We will carry spare batteries on the spring round instead of ordering them afterwards, so no home waits more than a day. The village-by-village table is in the annual report.

2,140 homes lit since 2011 · 91¢ of every dollar goes to the field

Two panels, three lamps and a year of repairs for one home. Most gifts are at work in a village within six weeks.
